of the square or in the Java language called Square Lor is one of
Yogyakarta city land mark in the form of a field that is in front of the
Sultan Palace. The square called Lor as in the city of Yogyakarta, there are two
square that is located in the south and north of the Sultan Palace.
Lor square, rectangular with an area of 150 x 150 meters with two large banyan tree fenced in the middle of the square. Two of the banyan tree that each named Kyai Kyai Dewandaru and Wijayandaru. In the past around the square Lor Banyan Trees planted 63 which symbolizes the life of the Prophet Muhammad.Some sources say that the first surface of the square is a fine sand suitable for training the soldiers also to show the greatness in the presence of Sultan. Sultan and the royal princes sitting on Siti Hinggil, namely the front of the palace had a higher surface to see the attraction of soldiers. Square Lor is also used for "Tapa Pepe", a form of folk show themselves to be heard and get the attention of the sultan.
Tapa Pepe performed on a scorching day in between two banyan tree by someone who is a direct appeal to the Sultan. In the past the east side of the square there is a small pavilion marquee-called shipping. Shipping is used by the regents to stay and rest when facing the sultan.
In ancient times, Square Lor is a sacred area where not just anyone is allowed to enter it. There are rules that must be adhered to if you want to enter, for example, may not use vehicles, shoes, slippers, cane, and develop an umbrella. This is done as a form of homage to the King palace Ngayogyakarta.
In contrast to today, Square Lor become a public space that can be used by everyone. Here can be found a wide variety of vendors that surround the square from morning to night. At certain times, such as the Fair Sekaten, Grebeg Maulud celebration of the Prophet, as well as other palace ceremony,Lor square will be transformed as a place bustling and crowded with many people because such events are always held in this square. Another unusual event held here is the arts and cultural performances, music concerts, fairs, cycling, and other activities.
The trip to the Square Lor is very easy because it lies in the middle of Yogyakarta City with easy access to get there. If you are from the Malioboro street, then straight south through the intersection toward zero kilo meters.
